Rokkoyo is a collective term that refers to the Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns that have produced pottery from medieval times to the present day. The term was coined by a historic ceramics scholar, Fujio Koyama, in 1948, and the Six Ancient Kilns were designated as Japan Heritage sites in 2017.

Rokkoyo is the new simple way to make yourself the perfect cup of coffee. It takes just coffee & water and nothing else. Based on the traditional Japanese tea kyusu, we have redesigned it to brew coffee by working with top Japanese baristas. Traditional craftsmanship has been combined with modern coffee science, so this minimalist kyusu will brew mellow, rich and flavorful coffee every time.

Twill weave stainless steel mesh outperforms plain weave in terms of strength, durability, flow rate, and filtration. The diagonal pattern of twill weave enhances stability and prevents shifting or distortion, ensuring long-lasting durability. It allows for better flow rate by reducing resistance, resulting in smoother coffee filtration.

Additionally, the diagonal pattern enhances particle retention, leading to more efficient filtration for unwanted particles in your coffee. With its superior strength, durability, flow rate, and filtration capabilities, twill weave stainless steel mesh is a reliable choice for optimal coffee filtering.

This minimalist yet thoughtful design is easy to use and doesn’t require disposable coffee filters. Just add coffee grounds and boiling water. It is very easy to clean and maintain. Unlike standard paper filters, the stainless steel mesh filter preserves the freshly extracted coffee oil, ensuring that your cup of coffee remains true to its original flavor.

Rokkoyo was made into reality by the craftful hands of renowned ceramic artist Sachi Watanabe, whose works have won the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award of Japan twice. Rokkoyo will not just brew great coffee, but also blend into your room design effortlessly as a decoration. 

The Ancient Kiln (Kouzan Touen) also particiapted The abdication of His Majesty the Emperor and the enthronement of His Imperial Highness the Crown Prince in 2020. We presented 3,400 red (vermilion) bottles and sake cups for the enthronement ceremony. Red (vermilion) bottles have been used only in ceremonies for the King of Japan since ancient times, and only selected kilns are allowed to make them.

Brewing coffee with Rokkoyo is simple. Anyone can effortlessly create a flavorful cup of coffee with no perfect technique required. Simply pour hot water into Rokkoyo and wait for two minutes. Rokkoyo brews your coffee with a mellow, rich, authentic taste that is incomparable to French Press or drip coffee.

The “chara-kake” technique  (チャラ掛け) in Japanese ceramics, involves applying a thin layer of slip to pottery surfaces, creating unique decorations. This method enhances luster and color without compromising texture, maintaining the pottery’s durability and beauty. 

Tokoname clay is crushed into fine pieces and transformed into a liquid glaze. By skillfully controlling the application and scraping of the slip, intricate patterns emerge, adding visual interest and a tactile experience for users. This traditional process, requiring precision and expertise, results in teapots with a striking textural contrast, making each piece visually appealing and culturally significant.

The secret lies in traditional Japanese wisdom. Rokkoyo uses unique clay from Tokoname that is naturally porous. The uneven internal wall of the pot and the specially designed shape helps to remove bitterness and other unpleasant taste as you pour. 

Using Rokkoyo enhances sweetness and richness while preserving the coffee’s original flavor. Rokkoyo ensures that the full flavor, richness, and taste of the coffee beans are preserved.

Rokkoyo does not only brew hot coffee but also cold. The process is similar but you would add ice water instead of hot water, and use coarse coffee grounds if available. Our barista recommended using dark roast beans, such as French Roast and Italian Roast, for best quality. Leave it in the refrigerator overnight and a great glass of iced coffee is ready. This allows you to enjoy the perfect coffee regardless of the seasons.

Rokkoyo weighs just around 300g empty, making it even easier to handle.

We have crafted the Rokkoyo in both right and left-handed versions, so it will provide an ideal experience for every owner.

Compared to coffee makers and other brewing equipment, Rokkoyo is very easy to clean after use. It is suitable for daily use as all you need to do is remove the coffee grounds and wash it with water afterwards.
